So, you booked your beach maternity session. Now what?

Figuring out what to wear for your maternity photoshoot on the beach can feel like a puzzle, but I promise: I’ve styled dozens of beach maternity sessions — from big-dreamy gowns to casual jeans and tops — so here’s everything I’ve learned about what works (and what you’ll wish you’d known sooner).

Cue: you, standing in front of your closet at 10 p.m., wondering if anything you own works for sand, salt air, and a baby bump that might have its own zip code by now.

Don’t panic. I promise you — there’s a perfect outfit (or two!) that’ll flatter you, feel comfy, and photograph beautifully against that San Diego shoreline.

What to Wear for Your Beach Maternity Photos in San Diego

The flowy, goddess dress

Let’s start with the showstopper: a long, flowy gown that dances in the breeze.

Why this is one of the best maternity photo ideas:

  • It creates movement, which looks incredible in photos. A little spin and that skirt does half my job for me.
  • It hugs your bump in all the right places but leaves you free to breathe, squat, and waddle gracefully (you know exactly what I mean).
  • It makes you feel stunning, even if you didn’t sleep last night because your unborn baby held a 2 a.m. dance party.

Top tips for picking the perfect dress:

  • Go for soft, airy fabrics — chiffon, silk blends, or tulle layers. Heavy satin + ocean wind = wrestling match.
  • Choose colors that pop: deep blue, rich emerald, or a muted blush. White can work too but watch for see-through moments.
  • Bring a pair of biker shorts or slip if your dress is sheer. San Diego sunsets have no secrets.

Neutral two-piece sets — effortless & modern

Maybe big gowns aren’t your thing. Totally fine. Some of my favorite beach maternity galleries feature mamas in simple two-piece sets or stretchy skirts with cropped tops.

Why it works for a maternity photoshoot on the beach:

  • It feels laid-back but intentional. Think “model off-duty goes to the beach.”
  • It lets you show as much or as little bump as you want.
  • It’s easy to move in — sit, squat, splash your feet. No tripping hazards.

Style ideas:

  • Earthy neutrals: beige, taupe, soft grey — they pair so nicely with the sand and sky.
  • Play with textures: ribbed knits, linen, or lightweight cotton.
  • Add a statement necklace or delicate gold earrings if you want to feel a bit extra.

The bold move: swimsuit + cover-up

This is one of my personal faves for couple beach maternity photos. Yes, you can wear a swimsuit for your maternity photos — and you’ll look like a sun-kissed goddess doing it.

One of my all-time favorite combos: a simple white bikini or one-piece layered with a sheer duster, oversized button-down, or a flowy kimono.

Perfect for:

  • Dipping your toes (or belly) into the waves.
  • Showing off that bump with zero fuss.
  • Getting a few shots that feel flirty and editorial.

My Tips:

  • Stick with solid colors for swimsuits — busy patterns can distract from your beautiful belly.
  • If you want extra coverage, a wrap skirt or sarong looks gorgeous and easy to slip on and off.

Casual classics: jeans and a cute top

Not every mama wants a gown — and honestly, sometimes, simple is everything. A classic white shirt and jeans maternity photoshoot look is timeless.

I love when clients show up in a comfy pair of jeans (unbuttoned if needed!) and a cute, fitted top or a slouchy sweater. It feels real, authentic, and so “California casual.”

This works if you:

  • Want part of your shoot to feel like a candid day at the beach.
  • Love mixing a more dressed-up look with casual shots for variety.
  • Want to move, play, or piggyback on your partner without worrying about tripping on fabric.

Bonus: Don’t forget the details

A stunning outfit is just step one — here’s how to pull the whole vibe together:

  • Barefoot is best. Sand in your shoes is never cute — let your toes be free.
  • Soft waves or braids win every time. Wind will have opinions about your hair — go with the flow.
  • Keep makeup fresh and dewy. Heavy foundation plus ocean mist? A sticky situation.
  • Bring a cozy blanket. Not only does it add texture, but you can sit on it or wrap it around your shoulders for snuggly sunset shots.
  • Pack a backup. One glam look, one casual — we can switch halfway for a totally different feel.

When to do a maternity photoshoot on the beach

Quick detour — timing matters!
Wondering when to do a maternity photoshoot? For beach sessions, aim for 28–34 weeks.

Your belly is round, you’re still (mostly) comfortable moving around, and you can handle a bit of sandy adventure. Sunset is my go-to time for that soft, magical light.
