Family Photoshoots But Make it Special to You

I take soooo many family photoshoots every single year and while I absolutely love all of them, the ones that are unique to you and your family hold a special place in my heart. Whether that means taking your photos in a certain location, doing a specific theme, or wearing certain outfits, anything that can personalize your photoshoot will always make it more meaningful. In September, I captured a super meaningful maternity/family photoshoot that was unique and told a story specific to their beautiful family! In this blog, I’m sharing all of the details of that photoshoot and giving you some ideas on how you can make your family photoshoot more unique to you!

A Mama and Her Boys

Any photoshoot that is less traditional and more personal to your family’s story immediately gets me so excited. I love capturing moments in your family’s beautiful love story and that is exactly what we did for this lovely family. They have two boys and are currently expecting their third so they wanted to make sure they captured this time of their life. They are also not finding out the gender of the baby until the birth making it that much more exciting!

They chose to take their family photos at the home she grew up in which personalized the experience that much more. Her childhood family home has so much charm and character with lots of open space, horses, and a beautiful mountain backdrop. I just followed them around as they showed their little boys the horses and ran around the property. They dressed super casual with jeans, t-shirts, and cowboy hats which fit so well with the location!

These are the types of photoshoots that make me want to edit them as soon as we are done with the session. A growing family. The house she grew up in. Her boys, just as they are. Her little one growing. Photos you can feel. Memories you can hold on to.

Ideas on How to Make Your Family Photoshoot Unique to You

If you have already captured the more traditional types of family photos like at the beach or in a field, and you want something more unique, this is for you. When planning your family photoshoot, think about what is special to your family. Here are some questions to ask  yourself:

Is there a location that holds a lot of meaning to you and your family?

Picking a location for a family photoshoot that is more meaningful can make the session that much more special. Maybe it’s the house you grew up in, the place you got engaged, your family’s favorite restaurant, or the cabin you have been going to as a family for years.

Is there an activity that you love doing together?

Doing an activity during your photoshoot is one of the best ways to feel more comfortable in front of the camera and is great when you have little ones. And I’m sure you and your family have an activity that you love doing together so why not photograph it?

Okay if you’re still stuck on what to do, here are some ideas for how you can make your family photoshoot more unique to your family:

  • Take photos in the comfort of your home! I love these photoshoots because your home is where you and your kids will feel the most comfortable.
  • Set up a picnic on the beach with your favorite snacks.
  • Watch the sunset in the back of your SUV or truck with some cozy blankets.
  • Do a weekend getaway with the kids and rent a cozy cabin.
  • Carve pumpkins in the fall.
  • Build gingerbread houses during Christmas time.
  • If your family loves going to the desert, take your photos there.
  • Or maybe your family loves snowboarding, I’m up for a snowy photoshoot.

When it comes to making your family photoshoot more personal and unique, just pick something that you all love. Whether that’s an activity or a location, it will make your session that much more special!
