Capturing Special Moments: A Guide to Perfect Family Photos with Little Ones

Capturing Special Moments: A Guide to Perfect Family Photos with Little Ones

If you have little ones, then this blog is for you. I know way too many people who ditch the idea of family photos altogether because they are worried it will be too hard to capture photos with them. Well, I am here to tell you that is not the case. As a San Diego family photographer who primarily works with families with little ones, it’s much more simple than you think and I am here to help you out. So keep reading for all the tips on how to capture the perfect family photos with little ones!

Capturing Memories Over the Years

Before we get into the tips, I first want to talk about why you should be capturing your family over the years with photoshoots. I’m sure your parents have always told you that they blinked and you were all grown up. Well, let’s just say you are definitely going to feel that one day. Taking one hour a year to head to your favorite location for some family photos is well worth it. And I don’t believe in posy pose photoshoots. I want you and your family to have fun, run around, and truly be laughing and smiling with one another.

In twenty years when your little ones are all grown up and out of the house, it will be so special to have annual family photos to look back. To see their changes and growth each year. To cherish the moments when life was a little more crazy.

3-4 Years of Family Photoshoots & Counting

Kendall and her family are one of those families that take their family photos every single year. Kendall has been one of my favorite influencers for a while now. We connected about 3-4 years ago and now I have had the opportunity to document her little family on the beach on her annual family vacation out here! I always have the best time, they are some of the sweetest humans with some great energy! I love that Kendall is always down to try something new with the camera and is willing to trust me creatively during every session we have. I’m looking forward to seeing them again this year and hopefully every year after that!

Tips For Capturing Family Photos With Little Ones

Okay, now let’s get into all the tips on how to capture your family photos with little ones. I get it. It can seem super daunting. You want your kids to behave, you are worried about them acting up. But, I am here to tell you that it is totally okay if that happens. They are kids and sometimes they have bad days. As a photographer, my goal is to help walk you through this and do my best to make sure that you all have fun. But, here are some tips to capturing photos with your little ones.

1. Location, Location, Location

I definitely recommend picking a location where your kids have the freedom to run around. I personally love the beach because they can play in the sand and splash in the water. And kids typically associate the beach with a fun time so it will hopefully get them excited.

2. Embrace the Craziness

If your kids are in a wild phase, I LOVE IT. Let’s embrace it. Run around with them. Roll in the sand, splash in the water. We will capture the most candid and playful photos that I promise you will love. Real moments with real emotions.

3. Make Sure they are Comfortable

Comfort is so important for kids because the second they decide they don’t like the way they are dressed, it can be all over. So, with little ones, I say ditch the more formal clothing and keep it simple. Whatever your kid typically like wearing, have them wear that but just make sure it is in the colors you want.

4. Morning Photoshoots

If you have super little ones, morning photoshoots are often better. They aren’t tired yet and the likelihood of a meltdown is hopefully way less.
